The local community consists mainly of white farmers and native Setswana peoples, the main language spoken here being Tswana and Afrikaans, with a small percentage of Xhosa and English also being spoken. Farming is mostly sheep, goats and cattle. Further to the south vineyards are plentiful due to the proximity of the Orange River.
The local town is Vanzylsrus, consisting of the basics, a fuel station, a general store and a hotel (currently being renovated). There is a small primary school educating about 300 of the local Tswana children from surrounding farms.
Crime in the area is not a big problem, although petty theft might be an issue in Van Zylsrus.
